Mooloolaba Triathlon
One of Australia's largest and most beloved multisport events — 5,000+ athletes racing the iconic Mooloolaba harbour course each March, with distance categories for every level of competitor.
About the Race
The Mooloolaba Triathlon is one of Australia's largest and most beloved multisport events, consistently attracting fields of more than 5,000 athletes to the Sunshine Coast each March. With a history spanning decades of racing on Mooloolaba's iconic beachfront, the event has earned its place as the race that defines the Australian triathlon season opener — competitive yet inclusive, welcoming elite internationals and first-time triathletes on the same course.
The Olympic distance event (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run) is the headline race, drawing the strongest field and the most competitive age-group racing. The sprint distance option (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) brings in newer triathletes and those returning from time off, while swim-only and run-only events make the weekend accessible for those who want to experience the atmosphere without the full multisport commitment.
The Mooloolaba course is particularly well-regarded among the triathlon community. The harbour swim takes place in the protected channel alongside the boat harbour — a calm, enclosed course that removes open-water anxiety for developing triathletes while remaining technical enough for elite racing. The bike course ventures north along the coastal highway, flat enough for fast riding but long enough to separate the field meaningfully. The run returns athletes to the Esplanade, where supporters crowd the course all the way to the finish chute.
For supporters, the Mooloolaba Triathlon is one of the Coast's great spectator events. The compact beachfront layout means families can watch the swim, walk 200 metres to cheer athletes through transition, and position themselves along the run course — all without missing any of the action. The post-race atmosphere on the Esplanade, with athletes, families, and locals celebrating in the warm Sunshine Coast autumn sun, is quintessentially Australian.
Mooloolaba accommodation for triathlon weekend fills extremely quickly — many returning athletes book twelve months in advance. Properties along the Esplanade and within walking distance of transition book first. Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore provide excellent alternatives within a short drive.
