Getting Certified
Several PADI and SSI certified dive schools operate on the Sunshine Coast. The Open Water certification (PADI) takes 3–4 days and costs $350–500. You'll do confined water training in a pool followed by open water dives at local sites.
If you're short on time, try a Discover Scuba experience (half-day, $150–200) to sample diving with instructor supervision before committing to certification.
Marine Life
Expect to see reef fish (parrotfish, groupers, snappers), turtles, rays, nudibranchs, and sometimes sharks and octopuses. Winter/spring brings occasional whale sharks and manta rays. Visibility typically ranges 10–20m depending on conditions and season.
Tips & Conditions
- April–October offers calmest seas and best visibility
- Wear a wetsuit — water is cool even in summer
- Check conditions and plan dives with experienced operators
- Sea urchins and stonefish are present — wear appropriate footwear when wading
Frequently Asked Questions
The main scuba diving sites on the Sunshine Coast include the ex-HMAS Brisbane wreck off Mooloolaba (one of Queensland's premier dive sites), Flinders Reef near Noosa, and various offshore reefs accessible by boat. Mooloolaba is the main departure hub, with several operators offering dives on the Brisbane wreck for both beginners and certified divers.
Certified divers can join standard boat dives to the ex-HMAS Brisbane and local reefs. If you're not certified, many Sunshine Coast operators offer discover scuba diving experiences — a short briefing followed by a supervised shallow dive — which require no prior experience. Full PADI certification courses are also available through local dive schools.
Visibility on the Sunshine Coast varies by site and season. The ex-HMAS Brisbane wreck typically offers 10–20 metre visibility in good conditions, with the best diving usually from April to September when the sea is calmer. Water temperature ranges from around 19°C in winter to 27°C in summer, so a wetsuit is recommended year-round.
