IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast
One of the Asia-Pacific region's most prestigious middle-distance triathlons — a World Championship qualifier held each September at Mooloolaba with elite and age-group athletes from across the world.
About the Race
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast is one of the Asia-Pacific region's most prestigious middle-distance triathlon events, drawing elite and age-group athletes from across Australia and the world to Mooloolaba each September. As a World Championship qualifier, the race attracts a highly competitive international field alongside thousands of age-group competitors making it their season's target event — creating an atmosphere of elite competition and personal achievement that makes race weekend one of the most energetic on the Sunshine Coast calendar.
The 70.3 course plays to Mooloolaba's greatest strengths. The 1.9km swim takes place in the protected waters of the Mooloolaba harbour channel — calm, clear, and perfectly suited to a fast swim for experienced triathletes. The 90km bike course departs the Esplanade and climbs into the Sunshine Coast hinterland, delivering a technically demanding route through the Blackall Range foothills. The 21.1km run returns to the Mooloolaba foreshore, tracking along the Esplanade and the Alexandra Headland boardwalk in front of thousands of cheering spectators.
For spectators, IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast is among the best triathlon events in Australia to watch. The compact Mooloolaba layout means the swim exit, transition zones, the run course, and the finish line are all within easy walking distance. The Esplanade cafés and bars provide the perfect vantage point for watching athletes on the run course, and the finish line atmosphere — where every finisher receives a loud welcome regardless of their time — is genuinely moving.
Race weekend spans several days, with athlete check-in, bike racking, and the IRONMAN Village on the Esplanade creating a festival atmosphere in central Mooloolaba from the Thursday. The September timing places the race at the beginning of Sunshine Coast spring — warm enough for comfortable racing, with ocean temperatures rising above 22°C and the humpback whale migration in full swing just offshore.
Athletes and supporters should book Mooloolaba accommodation six months or more in advance — race weekend fills the entire beachfront. Properties along the Esplanade offer the most convenient access to transition and the finish line. Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore provide excellent alternatives a short drive away.
